Guided Tours Buurkerk & Restoration studio
Take a behind-the-scenes look at Museum Speelklok during Utrecht Heritage Day!
This special edition of Utrecht Heritage Day has the theme ‘Utrecht connects’. On Saturday, September 14th, Museum Speelklok is offering guided tours of the Buurkerk and the Restoration studio. The guided tours are free of charge. If you would like to visit the rest of the museum, you will need an admission ticket.
Buurkerk
A guide from Museum Speelklok will share more about the church’s history and its hidden frescoes. Every hour from 12:00 to 16:00, a guided tour will start from the museum café. The Buurkerk has played a significant role in the city for over a thousand years. Until 1125, it was the only church intended for the townspeople. The church has survived fires, storms, floods, withstood shelling, and left the Reformation behind. The Buurkerk was an important connection between the two sides of the city; urban traffic moved right through the church.
After serving various purposes over the years, the music of Museum Speelklok has filled its halls since 1984.
Restoration studio
Take a behind-the-scenes look at the unique Restoration studio, adjacent to Flora’s Hof. Here, the museum’s collection is maintained and restored. Thanks to our restorers, the instruments play exactly as they did, sometimes hundreds of years ago! Especially for Utrecht Heritage Day, the Restoration studio will open its doors; normally, this area is off-limits to visitors. Every half hour between 12:00 and 16:00, a guide will talk about the history of this building and the work carried out here.
Buurtoren
You can also take a look inside the 55-meter-high ‘Buurtoren’, the tower that belongs to the Buurkerk. Historically, the church’s and the city’s bells were housed in this tower. The Utrechts Klokkenluiders Gilde (Utrecht Bell Ringers Guild) will be giving guided tours and demonstrations of manual bell ringing throughout the day.
