Location performance Free to be Free
As part of the Black Achievement Month, the location performance Free to be Free can be seen between October 7 and 14, with Museum Speelklok as the starting location. The performance about freedom and resistance is organized and performed by the Sites of Memory company.
How free are you to be free? The answer to that question is different for everyone. After successful performances in Amersfoort and Deventer, the performance Free to be Free now focuses on Utrecht stories. The audience is taken on a theatrical route through the city, starting at Museum Speelklok and ending at the Pandhof Sinte Marie (Utrecht Conservatory). You will pass places that are linked to colonial history in Utrecht. Stories come to life through dance, theater, poetry and music. The performance will also be performed in 2023 and 2024 in Deventer, Amersfoort, Haarlem, Amsterdam and Willemstad in Curaçao. Watch the trailer here.
Commemorative year
Free to be Free was specially developed in the context of the commemoration year, in which 150 years of the abolition of slavery in the Netherlands and its (former) colonies are commemorated. We can learn a lot from the freedom fighters of the past and certainly also from the people who are working hard for freedom today. How was freedom fought then and now? And what forms of rebellion and resistance are known?
Free to be Free is a collaboration between Sites of Memory and Comité June 30/July 1 Utrecht & Amersfoort, Museum Speelklok, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht and Kosmopolis Utrecht.
