The wonderful world of Charles Morgan

It was designer André Postma who enthusiastically introduced the museum to the moving artworks of Charles Morgan. In Switzerland, he saw crowds gathering around a store window where marbles set various objects in motion.

Humor is the trademark of Charles Morgan (1951), the son of a Swiss father and an English mother. He combines the mechanical precision of Swiss clockmakers with a quirky, absurd humor reminiscent of Monty Python. The result is always a colorful, moving artwork, often built around a central marble track. ‘Found objects’ are attached to the track and are set in motion by the marbles. Through a genuine chain reaction, the movement ripples throughout the entire piece.

Charles Morgan x Museum Speelklok

Museum Speelklok invited Charles Morgan to the museum and its restoration studio. For his new artwork, he was allowed to select items from a box of parts collected over the years: gears, metal springs, organ pipes — materials with no historical value but far too beautiful to throw away. Morgan was so inspired that he decided to incorporate everything into the artwork and even added items from his own workshop.

In 2017, Friends of Museum Speelklok raised the funds to purchase the artwork. Since the spring of 2022, it has been proudly displayed in the showcase on the exterior of Museum Speelklok.
